What to grab from your wardrobe for Thanksgiving.

Now that the holiday season has arrived, we're all ready to sit around the dinner table and enjoy a wonderful meal of turkey, stuffing, and all the fixing's. But like with all events, clothing is an important part of the festivities and many people have no idea what they should wear to a party or get-together. To help you take the guesswork out of this particular holiday, we're going to give you some tips on what to wear for Thanksgiving dinner this year.

Pick Something Comfortable

Despite some potential stresses that come with having people over and preparing food, Thanksgiving is typically a relaxed affair. This is why, first and foremost, that wearing something comfortable is typically the most accepted guideline. In most situations, you can't go wrong with slipping on some social apparel whether it's jeans and a t-shirt or a nice dress.

Take the Family’s Style Cues

If you're having Thanksgiving dinner with your own family or a family that you're familiar with, then it certainly doesn't hurt to take style cues from them. Whether they're somewhat formal or completely relaxed, you can't go wrong with fashioning your own mode of attire after theirs. If you're unsure, it never hurts to ask someone.

Default to Being Lady-Like

You definitely don't want to show up at a person's home for a Thanksgiving celebration and realize that you're dressed inappropriately. If you're in doubt of what to wear, default being lady-like, meaning nothing too revealing whether it's a short skirt or low-cut top. Of course, this doesn't mean that you can't add a certain flare such as bright colors or a few pieces of jewelry.

Always Dress with Respect

Since the holiday season is a time for family and friends, you always want to show respect. After all, these are people who have invited you into their home for a nice dinner and it's the least you can do. As a general rule, don't wear anything that you wouldn't wear around your boss if you were jockeying for a promotion.

No Sweats or Yoga Pants

When we say that Thanksgiving dinner is a relaxed affair, keep in mind that this still has limits. Even if you think it would be acceptable to wear sweats or yoga pants and no one will mind if you do, just don't do it. You may not have to wear high-fashion clothing, but you also shouldn't eat turkey like you just fell out of bed.

Ask Your Partner for Advice

For a boyfriend or girlfriend who's having dinner with their significant other's family for the first time, the holiday season can be quite stressful. Even if you know his or her parents pretty well, their Thanksgiving get-together might be a bit more formal. If in doubt, simply ask your partner for advice on what would be appropriate to wear

Don’t Steal the Spotlight

No matter what you do, don't try to steal the spotlight or make a spectacle of yourself. While you may be very comfortable with the family, this probably isn't the the right time to show off your new purple hair or wear a dress that you would normally go clubbing in. Just try to keep it a bit low-key and you'll be fine.
